11th Annual JAZZ ON 4TH STREET Festival
Benefit For Berkeley High School Performing Arts

Presented by KCSM/Jazz 91, Yoshi's at Jack London Square and 4th Street Merchants, the 11th Annual Jazz on 4th Street Festival place Sunday, May 20, from Noon 5:00pm in Berkeley, CA on Fourth Street between Hearst and Virginia. This free outdoor music festival benefits the Berkeley High Performing Arts and the award-winning Berkeley High Jazz ensemble and combos. The event hot line is 510.526.6294. The Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble, once home to Joshua Redman, Dave Ellis, Peter Apfelbaum, Benny Green and many others, is facing major budget cuts. The proceeds from this event will help the school continue the jazz programs and send the ensemble to Japan this summer to perform at several jazz festivals. While in Japan, the ensemble members will stay in homes of Japanese students. Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble Parent Coordinator Ruth Tabancay says, "Without the wonderful help of the merchants on 4th Street and Abrams/Millikan each year with this Festival, people all over the world would not have the joy of hearing these accomplished musicians. We truly appreciate the help of the community in giving to the Jazz Program."

The street and the plaza will be filled with 4th Street merchants with food and their wares. The free musical performances by several of today¹s best musical groups legendary R&B from Sugar Pie DeSanto, latin jazz from Wayne Wallace and the classic jazz sounds of Marcus Shelby. The Festival kicks off with two Berkeley High School Combos and the grand finale of the Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble to close out the day.

MARCUS SHELBY QUARTET (1:15pm 2:00pm) Award-winning bassist and composer Marcus Shelby makes his debut on 4th Street performing classic jazz standards and straight-ahead swinging jazz. One of the most prolific players in modern jazz, Shelby will lead a quartet of today¹s best jazz musicians.

SUGAR PIE DeSANTO (2:15pm 3:00pm) Sugar Pie DeSanto is an award winning legend of R&B music. She is a first-class soulsinger, a commanding jazz stylist, an uproarious comedienne, a show-stopping dancer and an expert tunesmith. Her last CD, Refined Sugar, has received international attention and accolades.

WAYNE WALLACE LATIN JAZZ GROUP (3:10pm 4:00pm) Bay Area trombonist, educator, arranger and composer Wayne Wallace brings his Latin Jazz Group to 4th Street. With a name that is synonymous with Bay area Latin, Funk and jazz music, Wallace will perform material from his latest CD, The Reckless Pursuit of Beauty, music full of Brazilian and Latin rhythms.
