Empty moves (parts I & II)

Part of the 2010 Next Wave Festival

Oct 27, 29 & 30, 2010, 7:30pm

NY Premiere (Empty moves part II)

Ballet Preljocaj
Music by John Cage
Choreography by Angelin Preljocaj

"Angelin Preljocaj owns an expressive vocabulary potentially far richer than that of many modern choreographers." —The Telegraph (UK)

Whether putting an explicitly modern spin on the classics (Rite of Spring, 2002 Next Wave) or creating blazingly original works, choreographer Angelin Preljocaj challenges conventional ideas about form and content. Last at BAM with Near Life Experience (2004 Next Wave), he explored the human capacity for intense sensation and detachment that transcends the corporeal.

This season, Preljocaj returns to earth with Empty moves (parts I & II), revealing the body’s remarkable facility for nuanced line, clarity, and form—with each phrase building organically upon the last. Accompanied by excerpts from John Cage’s enigmatic Empty Words (recorded at a 1977 performance in Milan which includes boos and jeering from the audience), the dancers move with concentrated grace and force, echoing the unwavering calm of Cage’s voice.
