From how music is produced to how music finds its way to listeners, Bay Area companies have revolutionized the music world. We've watched companies like Digidesign turn nearly every recording studio digital and Apple make it possible to put our entire music library in our pockets. Now add to that, IODA, Real Rhapsody, Yahoo, Snocap, MP3.com, Pandora, Sonic Living, INgrooves and IRIS, and the Bay Area becomes ground zero for the future of music.

However, The Bay Area hasn't been recognized as a major center for music since the 60s and the heyday of hippies, haight street, and hare krishnas. Will the recent rise of these Bay Area players change that? In this Salon we will have representatives from these revolutionary companies address the following topics:

* Collaboration vs Competition? How are we working together and creating best practices for this emerging industry?
* How are Bay Area digital music companies preparing for the future?
* In what ways does the digital music industry impact the Bay Area, it's artist community, it's job market, and it's image around the world?

What is Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC)?
Since its founding in 1976, BAVC has worked to connect diverse communities to the creation and innovation of media. We teach. We empower creative expression. We preserve the past. And we develop future media and mediamakers. Projects that pass through our doors go on to national broadcast on PBS, are screened at Sundance, South by Southwest and garner awards like Emmys. Our editors, technicians, and preservationists include some of the best in the field today. Our technology partners -- including Adobe, Apple, Avid, Pure Digital, Nokia, Autodesk, Sony, Black Magic Design and AJA -- ensure that we provide the most relevant equipment and software. BAVC's support from funders like The Ford Foundation, The MacArthur Foundation, New Art Trust, and The San Francisco Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development (to name just a few), who believe in our mission, allow us to further our goal of providing accessible technology for everyone.

In our 30th year, we realize that our field is at more than just a crossroads. Monumental shifts in media production, dissemination, and financing models have radically shifted the needs of our core constituents. Looking forward, we are launching two new initiatives that will give our communities unique opportunities to engage with emerging technologies--the Producers Institute for New Technologies and our Next Generation Innovation Lab. What won't change is BAVC's historic spirit of experimentation, innovation and community building that first opened our doors in 1977. We're not just leading the way; we're taking everyone with us. http://www.bavc.org
