Osher Marin JCC premieres English language version of documentary film on the last rabbi to survive the Holocaust: Rabbi Leo Trepp.

Last year, German public television produced a film about the last Rabbi to survive the Holocaust. On March 28, 2010 at 2pm, the English language version of the film The Last Rabbi will be premiered at the Osher Marin Jewish Community Center, 200 North San Pedro Road, San Rafael, in an event to honor its subject, 96-year old Leo Trepp. Thanks to a generous donation by friends of Rabbi Trepp, the Marin JCC commissioned the audio redesign and will show the film and present Rabbi Trepp in conversation with Rabbi Micah Hyman of Congregation Beth Sholom, San Francisco.

Trepp was a young Rabbi when he witnessed Kristallnacht and was sent to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. The chief Rabbi of London was able to arrange for his release and Leo made his way to the Bay Area where he became a professor, developed and led congregations, and wrote many books on Judaism including The Complete Book of Jewish Observance, A History of the Jewish Experience and Judaism: Development and Life. While there are many Rabbis who were alive in Europe during the Shoah, Leo Trepp is the last Rabbi who was an ordained Rabbi at the time in Germany to survive today. Representatives of the numerous congregations he led will be gathering to honor this preeminent of the Bay Area Jewish community.

The event is free and open to the public. Seats can be reserved by leaving a message at 415-444-8080.
