sa•lon [suh-lon; Fr. sA-lawN]) n. – A gathering of stimulating people of quality under the roof of an inspiring hostess or host, partly to amuse one another and partly to refine their taste and increase their knowledge through conversation and readings. Commonly associated with French literary and philosophical salons of the 17th & 18th centuries. (Source: www.wikipedia.org)

sa•lon south a•sia [suh-lon south ey-zhuh] n. – An inspiring gathering of stimulating and eclectic people under the ROM’s cathedral ceilings, hosted by the Friends of South Asia Committee. A soirée where one can sip sumptuous cocktails, see South Asian contemporary arts in many forms and swoon over South Asian culture in all its splendour.

Be inspired. Be provoked. Be part of the dialogue. Be fabulous.

Cocktails: Cash Bar
Dress: Gallery Chic

Artists include:

Sylvat Aziz, painter and sculptor, will examine cultural customs and practices where invasive personal manipulation extends to thought, usually along gender, class and blood lines.

Noni Kaur, installation artist, will create a ground sculpture using traditional techniques and exploring subjects of female sexuality, sensuality and the cultural attitudes around them.

Anita Katakkar, musician, will create underlying melodic and rhythmic loops on a keyboard and play a mixture of contemporary grooves and classical compositions on tabla.

Sudarshan Belsare, dancer and video installation artist, will present a black and white video loop of a dance performance that integrates his bold and edgy approach, dexterity and technical virtuosity.

Puja Amin, dancer, will present a collage of Indian dance with swift beats and resonating voices that meld the enticing rhythms of traditional and modern-day India.

Plus, get a rare glimpse of treasures from the ROM’s South Asian collection before the Sir Christopher Ondaatje South Asian Gallery re-opens early next year.

Musical ambiance by Cultural Spinstress DJ Zahra.
