The Pentagon -- A History June 21, 2007

Veteran Washington Post war reporter Steve Vogel offers a fascinating account The Pentagon-- from its hurried beginnings during FDR’s presidency and World War II to the efforts to rebuild after the 9/11 attacks. Vogel brings to life those who built it, worked within it, and reconstructed it after one of the most terrible days in American history. The Pentagon is a portrait, not just of a building but of the American military’s reaction to crises from the 1940s to the present.

For more than a decade, Washington Post reporter Steve Vogel has reported on the American military, covering the Gulf War, Rwanda, Somalia, and the Balkans for The Washington Post and other outlets.

His coverage of the war in Afghanistan was among a group of Washington Post stories selected as finalists for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize. He currently has a biweekly Washington Post column, Military Matters, which covers items of interest to Washington DC’s large military population.
